High-mass polymer chassis and resonance control

The Model 8 uses a CNC-machined chassis made from a unique high-density polymer resin material. This delivers high mass, a compact footprint and superb resonance absorption, helping your records emerge from an inky quiet background with impressive grip and authority. Compared with its predecessor, the SME Model 6, the SME Model 8 increases mass by around 40%, further stabilising the platform and tightening bass definition while preserving SME’s hallmark timing and coherence.  Advanced isolation feet with internal decoupling allow precise levelling and reduce structure-borne vibration.

Precision belt-drive and DSP speed control

Drive stability is handled by a highly sophisticated electronic speed control unit derived from technology developed for the SME Flagship Model 60 turntable. The SME Model 8 uses a bi-phase, frequency and amplitude DSP-based sine-wave generator feeding a dedicated discrete power amplifier, which in turn drives a custom twin-coil AC motor.

Two pure sine waves power the motor, and speed is user-adjustable in fine steps of approximately 0.0133 Hz. This allows you to set musical pitch with exceptional accuracy at both 33⅓ and 45 rpm. A supplied stroboscopic disc helps you verify this visually, giving you complete confidence that your records are spinning exactly as intended.

SME 309 tonearm and Crystal Cable wiring

The SME Model 8 comes equipped with the highly regarded SME 309 tonearm, built to the same meticulous standard as all SME’s top tonearms. The SME 309 features a rigid magnesium arm tube and detachable headshell for easy cartridge changes and fine azimuth adjustment. A tungsten balance weight and high-precision bearings in all planes support smooth, low-friction movement.

Internal Crystal Cable wiring is fitted as standard, channelling the signal from cartridge tags to the gold-plated WBT RCA sockets. This combination of engineering and cabling helps preserve low-level detail, stereo imaging and tonal subtlety across your record collection.

The 309 tonearm offers a cartridge balance range of 6–17 g, making the SME Model 8 compatible with a wide selection of moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges commonly chosen by audiophiles in India. Effective mass is specified at 9.5 g, providing an excellent match with many modern designs.

Finish options and system integration

The Model 8 is offered in three finishes: traditional SME Black, White and Midnight Blue, each with contrasting detailing. On the rear you’ll find gold-plated WBT RCA sockets, a low-voltage input from the external speed control unit and an earthing point, allowing simple integration into high-end phono stages and amplifiers. Power consumption is modest (5 W idle, 10 W max), and versions of the control unit are available for 100 V, 115 V and 230 V mains, simplifying installation across different regions, including India.
